Where do the words come from?
The English word lists are built from WordNet, a widely used lexical database from Princeton University, and ranked with a frequency list of common English words. Offensive entries are filtered out before the lists reach the site.
Are offensive words filtered out?
Yes. Every list is checked against a blocklist of offensive, obscene, and hateful terms before publication. No automated filter catches everything, so teachers may still want to preview a list before use.
Can I use the generated words in commercial work?
You can use the generated word lists in your own projects, including lessons, games, worksheets, and commercial products. Please do not try to resell the word data itself as a dictionary or a competing word list.
Can I use ShuffleWords in my classroom?
Yes, it is designed for classroom use. There is no sign-up, no cost, and no software to install, so a teacher can open a tool on a projector and start a round immediately.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Every tool works without an account, an email address, or a login, and there is nothing to pay.
Does it work offline?
After the page and its word lists have loaded once, generating new words happens in your browser and does not require a new network request. A weak connection will not interrupt a game or a lesson.
How random are the results?
Each word is drawn at random from the selected list every time you generate. There is no fixed order to memorize, and the generator does not favor or avoid words based on what you saw before.
Can the same word appear twice?
Inside a single batch each word is unique. Across two batches the same word can come back, because every draw is independent.
Do you save the words I generate?
No. Generation happens in your browser, and the words you draw are never sent to our servers. The site does not keep a history of your lists.
What statistics does the site collect?
A first-party statistics service counts page views and unique visitors so we know which tools are useful. It does not store raw IP addresses, does not use visitor cookies, and applies a salt that rotates daily. Google Analytics 4 loads only when consent is given or where regional rules allow it. Do you use cookies?
The site does not use visitor cookies for its own statistics. Google Analytics 4, when it loads, may set its own cookies; the privacy page explains the conditions and your choices.
Are the lists suitable for children?
The lists are filtered and everyday words are ranked first, which makes them suitable for most classrooms. Younger students should stay with the common and noun presets, where the vocabulary is simplest.
How do I report a problem or a bad word?
